Do I need to provide my Tax File Number (TFN)?
Super funds are required to ask for your TFN and
it is to your benefit to provide it.
Your TFN is confidential and AESuper will treat
it as such.
While it is not compulsory to provide your TFN, you should be
aware that if you choose not to:
- Your contributions will generally be taxed at
the highest marginal tax rate (plus Medicare levy) rather than
the concessional rate of 15%
- You will not be able to make voluntary member contributions
after 1 July 2007
- It may be difficult for the ATO to assess if you
are eligible for the Government Co-contribution
Your TFN will be used to:
- Help identify your benefits if other information
is insufficient
- Calculate tax on your benefit
- Enable the fund to accept your voluntary member
contributions, after 1 July 2007
- Provide information to the Commissioner of
Taxation for contribution reporting
- With your consent, pass on to another Super
fund in the event of you transferring your benefit there
- Submit to the Australian Taxation Office if
required, for example, if you have unclaimed monies.
Your member statement will show you if we already
have your TFN. If we don't have it and you choose to provide it,
please complete the Tax
File Number (TFN) Notification Form, ask your contributing
employer to pass it on, or call us.
From 1 July 2007, employers must pass the TFN of all new
employees to their chosen superannuation fund.
